On this double-header of a site tour, powerhouse lighting design firms Available Light and Lam Partners will walk us through their respective scopes of work at the gorgeously rejuvenated First Church of Christ, Scientist. Situated in the historic Christian Science Plaza, designed in the ’60s by I.M. Pei, the 13.5-acre site improvements sit in the heart of downtown Boston and include extensive exterior, landscape, and pedestrian lighting as well as a comprehensive update for several key interior spaces of the Publishing House including the Welcome Hall, the Mary Baker Eddy Exhibit and the Mapparium: an enormous, inside-out globe you can step inside for a history lesson (and featured on Atlas Obscura)!
From pedestrian walkaways and artfully crated pole lights to grand illuminated facades and a re-conceived Publishing House visitor experience, light is a key architectural element that reveals and celebrates the activities of the First Church of Christ, Scientist – this is surely a tour you won’t want to miss!!
1. Explain the makeup of the design team and discuss how decisions were made.
2. Describe how a complicated lighting project is broken down and executed.
3. Identify layers of lighting and discuss how solutions were achieved.
4. Describe challenges, factors, and considerations for appropriate nighttime lighting in urban environments.
