SUMMARY:Achieving Equitable Indoor Lighting – Redesigning and Rebalancing Current Approaches to Lighting
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a co-hosted event with CSI Boston! \nSee schedule and description below – please register for the event through the CSI Boston Event Page. \nLocal IES Boston Members have a special discounted ticket price. \nMeeting co-hosted with CSI Boston \n4:30pm – 5:00pm Networking\, appetizers\, and tabletop set up \n5:00pm – 5:30pm Networking and buffet dinner available \n5:30pm – 5:40pm Chapter announcements and speaker introductions \n5:40pm – 7:00pm Speaker presentation and Q & A \nUMass Club\, 32nd Floor\, parking available below the building and T accessible (Park Street\, Government Center\, State Street) \nEveryone deserves good lighting\, particularly indoors\, where many of us spend most of our time. This may be a simple declaration\, but in practice\, “good lighting” is a challenge to deliver equitably. Thoughtfully designed\, high-quality lighting has long been an indicator of wealth and prosperity. In contrast\, systemically disadvantaged and vulnerable communities\, especially the occupants of public buildings\, are often forced to accept substandard lighting. Light Justice began in 2020 by examining out-door lighting inequities: how lighting in the public realm has been historically used\, both intentionally and inadvertently\, to oppress and marginalize communities of color. These instances clearly demonstrate discriminatory social and environmental injustice. Moving indoors\, equitable light can be understood as well-designed daylighting and electric lighting that work in concert to provide a positive occupant experience. This light is the appropriate intensity\, color and distribution for the facility\, prioritizing people who spend the most time in the space. It is attractive; easily controlled to enable useful variability; supports visual acuity and circadian health; designed and specified to be affordable\, efficient and sustainable; and an investment in occupant satisfaction\, wellbeing\, and productivity.

SUMMARY:K-12 Educational Design: Tour of the New Josiah Quincy Upper School
DESCRIPTION:Event Description:\nSited at the threshold of Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood\, the newly opened Josiah Quincy Upper School (JQUS) showcases equitable\, community-focused\, sustainable design as one of the first projects to open under the Green New Deal for Boston Public Schools initiative. The high-rise facility creates expanded opportunities for Boston students\, with spacious\, light-filled learning and common areas\, as well as a coveted rooftop green space that supports student wellness. \nLocated just opposite the Josiah Quincy Elementary School\, the two structures form a gateway into the Chinatown neighborhood and establish a notable academic presence. A variety of bold colors\, chosen to reflect the diversity of the school’s enrollment\, outline windows along the building’s façade. \nA welcoming vertical circulation core within the school connects the upper academic floors with public-facing spaces near ground level. This state-of-the-art educational facility features south-facing classrooms with expansive windows for optimal daylighting. Collaborative project areas at the heart of each floor link classrooms\, science labs\, and breakout spaces\, accommodating various group and individual learning modes with flexible furniture and diverse workspaces. \nDespite the constraints of the school’s one-acre urban site adjacent to two major highways\, the design maintains a connection to nature and prioritizes student well-being via an accessible rooftop. The occupiable roof provides space for movement\, hands-on project work\, and mindful contemplation. An innovative and efficient HVAC system draws in fresh\, highly filtered air for classrooms to ensure a healthy interior environment. On track to achieve LEED Platinum certification\, the new fossil-fuel-free JQUS sets high efficiency\, resiliency\, and environmental health standards. \nAfter attending this program\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify challenges in school design unique to site constrained downtown high-rise applications.\nSummarize student wellness-oriented design strategies used for school facilities situated in urban neighborhoods lacking good air quality and green space.\nDescribe how a constant voltage distributed LED system can enliven theatrical and performance spaces.\nExplore integrated design approaches to classroom organization\, building orientation and lighting design to maximize daylight harvesting.\n\nPresenters:\nHMFH Architect Design team members leading the tour will include: \nMatt LaRue AIA | LEED Green Associate\, Melissa Greene AIA\, LEED AP BD+C\, Alicia Crothers AIA | LEED AP\, \nMatthew Mendonca | GGD Consulting Engineers
