This may be a simple declaration\, but in practice\, “good lighting” is a challenge to deliver equitably. Thoughtfully designed\, high-quality lighting has long been an indicator of wealth and prosperity. In contrast\, systemically disadvantaged and vulnerable communities\, especially the occupants of public buildings\, are often forced to accept substandard lighting. Light Justice began in 2020 by examining out-door lighting inequities: how lighting in the public realm has been historically used\, both intentionally and inadvertently\, to oppress and marginalize communities of color. These instances clearly demonstrate discriminatory social and environmental injustice. Moving indoors\, equitable light can be understood as well-designed daylighting and electric lighting that work in concert to provide a positive occupant experience. This light is the appropriate intensity\, color and distribution for the facility\, prioritizing people who spend the most time in the space. It is attractive; easily controlled to enable useful variability; supports visual acuity and circadian health; designed and specified to be affordable\, efficient and sustainable; and an investment in occupant satisfaction\, wellbeing\, and productivity.

The board can include any combination of text\, images\, and data the team feels demonstrates compliance with the award criteria. The board should comply with the below criteria: \n\n24” x 36” PDF\nLandscape Orientation\nNo crop & bleed marks.\nLimit of 10MB file size\nProof of payment must be attached to submission email\, as well as the name of the team and award being applied for.\nTitle of PDF should not include any identifying information about the design team or the name of project.\nAnyone involved in the project\, with the exception of manufacturers\, IES Staff and IES Board of Directors may enter a project for an Illumination Award.\nThe design team should be based in the area of the IES Boston and Rhode Island Sections\, projects may be located anywhere.\nPermanent and temporary installations can be submitted for awards consideration.\nThe installation must have been completed during the 24 months preceding January 2026\nThe project submitter must inform the owner\, and all others involved or associated in the project design\, of participation in the program and that the entry may be published by the IES Boston Section.\nProjects may submit for multiple award categories; a separate entry fee must be paid for each category.\nThe names of the designers\, the name of the design firm\, equipment manufacturers or specific brands are not allowed anywhere on the board. Any reference or endorsement of a commercial product is not allowed. Submittals with this information will be disqualified. However\, proper names of places (i.e.\, Waldorf Astoria\, Verizon\, Target) in the narrative is admissible.\nComplete submission must be received by 5pm on the due date\, submission after this point will not be judged.\nBoard will be printed as sent\, ensure they are scaled properly and at an appropriate resolution.\n\nIn the email submission\, please list all team members\, their firm and role. SUMMARY:Fundamentals of Lighting Training
DESCRIPTION:This intensive 10-module program covers the breadth of material that IES works to standardize\, communicate\, and distribute. Based on feedback from previous years\, we’re offering the course as a mix of in-person and virtual sessions. \nThe Fundamentals of Light course is an excellent refresher and source of continuing education credits for architectural\, interior\, and landscape designers\, engineers\, manufacturers\, and electrical contractors. It also serves as a strong introduction to industry standards for anyone new to the field. \nCEUs: Approved CEUs are offered for each session attended\, up to a maximum of 20. There are no scheduled make-up dates\, though exceptions will be considered in the event of severe weather. \nSchedule: The course runs for 5 weeks (with one week off for LEDucation in New York).
