SUMMARY:K-12 Educational Design: Tour of the New Josiah Quincy Upper School
DESCRIPTION:Event Description:\nSited at the threshold of Boston’s Chinatown neighborhood\, the newly opened Josiah Quincy Upper School (JQUS) showcases equitable\, community-focused\, sustainable design as one of the first projects to open under the Green New Deal for Boston Public Schools initiative. The high-rise facility creates expanded opportunities for Boston students\, with spacious\, light-filled learning and common areas\, as well as a coveted rooftop green space that supports student wellness. \nLocated just opposite the Josiah Quincy Elementary School\, the two structures form a gateway into the Chinatown neighborhood and establish a notable academic presence. A variety of bold colors\, chosen to reflect the diversity of the school’s enrollment\, outline windows along the building’s façade. \nA welcoming vertical circulation core within the school connects the upper academic floors with public-facing spaces near ground level. This state-of-the-art educational facility features south-facing classrooms with expansive windows for optimal daylighting. Collaborative project areas at the heart of each floor link classrooms\, science labs\, and breakout spaces\, accommodating various group and individual learning modes with flexible furniture and diverse workspaces. \nDespite the constraints of the school’s one-acre urban site adjacent to two major highways\, the design maintains a connection to nature and prioritizes student well-being via an accessible rooftop. The occupiable roof provides space for movement\, hands-on project work\, and mindful contemplation. An innovative and efficient HVAC system draws in fresh\, highly filtered air for classrooms to ensure a healthy interior environment. On track to achieve LEED Platinum certification\, the new fossil-fuel-free JQUS sets high efficiency\, resiliency\, and environmental health standards. \nAfter attending this program\, participants will be able to: \n\nIdentify challenges in school design unique to site constrained downtown high-rise applications.\nSummarize student wellness-oriented design strategies used for school facilities situated in urban neighborhoods lacking good air quality and green space.\nDescribe how a constant voltage distributed LED system can enliven theatrical and performance spaces.\nExplore integrated design approaches to classroom organization\, building orientation and lighting design to maximize daylight harvesting.\n\nPresenters:\nHMFH Architect Design team members leading the tour will include: \nMatt LaRue AIA | LEED Green Associate\, Melissa Greene AIA\, LEED AP BD+C\, Alicia Crothers AIA | LEED AP\, \nMatthew Mendonca | GGD Consulting Engineers

SUMMARY:How Tech is Changing Lighting Design Calculations
DESCRIPTION:When: Feb. 27 \nWhere: Cannon Design’s Boston Office \nSchedule: \n\n5:30-5:45: networking\n5:45-7:00: program\n7:00-7:30: clean-up\n\nDescription: \nLighting design is a complex profession\, whose tools have struggled to keep up with the pace of design.  The speakers will briefly review historical methods for calculations and move onto new paradigms for lighting analysis. They will also discuss how the core technologies such as the web\, cloud computing\, BIM\, daylight\, and artificial intelligence are shaping a new generation of design tools.  This talk will cover how these advances are changing the practice of lighting design. \nLearning Objectives:\n \n\nAttendees will be able to detail how cloud computing is changing design workflows\nAttendees will understand how they can leverage cloud storage to compare and access designs more easily\nAttendees will learn how BIM and raytracing are providing more detailed analysis with less work for lighting designers to work out problems.\nAttendees will be able to see how artificial intelligence can make IES recommendations more accessible.\n\nDan Glaser (Bio): \nDan Glaser is a lighting design tool builder with a passion for participatory design\, lighting science and application\, and technology. He is the Principal of LightStanza\, the lighting industry’s first cloud-based lighting analysis tool.  While a doctoral student in computer science and architecture at Berkeley Glaser started his research in this area\, being awarded an IES Alan Lucas Memorial Scholarship.  Glaser has since garnered research grants from the US Department of Energy and other sources and has published in leading Building and Computer Science journals including Building and Environment.  Glaser has also taught classes at the University of Colorado\, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute\, and at leading Lighting and Sustainability industry events.  For over a decade\, Glaser has been an active member of different IES technical committees. In addition to his work\, Glaser is a vegetarian and enjoys riding his fold-up bike between meetings and to and from airports.

SUMMARY:Biodynamic Lighting - A workshop on capturing the spirit of 'life-centric' lighting
DESCRIPTION:Event Details:\n\nPlease join us May 16\, 2023 for a workshop on Biodynamic Lighting from 5:30-7:30pm.\nLocation: Lumenpulse’s Boston Office (14 Beacon Street\, Suite 301)\nVirtual: We have also set-up a zoom link for those who would like to view the session virtually. The link information is included in the registration email.\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nThe term ‘biodynamic’ lighting is proposed as a term to capture the true aspiration of ‘life-centric’ lighting: good human and non-human outcomes for all life-sustaining behaviors on earth driven by good design for phototropism\, phototaxis\, photoperiodism and circadian entrainment. As many aspects of animal\, human and plant behaviour and survival are being perturbed by widespread exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN)\, lighting professionals are in the middle\, attempting to make design decisions that directly affect these life forms. This workshop empowers participants with fundamental understandings of how light information is used by these life forms in a way crucial for development\, growth and survival. \nKey references are consolidated and synthesized with goals of supporting knowledge translation into pragmatic lighting strategies in a manner useful for lighting professionals. \n\n\n\nA framework – that characterizes the lighting application\, determines the likely behavioral cycle(s) of life forms\, determines the restoration needs of these life forms\, reviews published guidelines to develop goals and design criteria that support human and non-human outcomes – is proposed to guide the lighting design process. \nSpeaker:\n \nAmardeep Dugar \n\n\n\nA trained architect and an advocate for all the elements of lighting – design\, education and research – Dr. Amardeep M. Dugar is the founding principal of Lighting Research & Design. After completing a Masters degree in Architectural Lighting from University of Wismar/Germany\, he pursued a Ph.D. from Victoria University of Wellington/New Zealand to solidify his academic and professional leadership role into a career at a higher level. His notable achievements include being named the Outstanding Young Scientist at the India International Science Fest 2016 and 40-Under-40 Hottest Lighting Designers in the World 2017 by Lighting Magazine UK amongst others. Aside from working on high profile projects and teaching at several architecture schools\, he has been instrumental in conducting lighting workshops educating students and professionals about the importance of lighting. Amardeep has presented at several international conferences such as the IES Annual Conference 2012\, 2015\, 2020 & 2022; IES Research Symposium 2016; Light Fair International 2014\, 2020 & 2023; IALD Enlighten 2014\, 2016 & 2019; Light Focus 2004 & 2006; and Professional Lighting Design Convention 2007\, 2009\, 2011\, 2013\, 2015\, 2017 & 2019 to name a few. He is also the co-founder of an online platform for lighting called the Virtual Lighting Design Community. He currently serves in the IES Board of Directors and is Chair of the IES Global Development Committee.

SUMMARY:Mastering the Maze of Lighting Controls Specification
DESCRIPTION:With so many different types of systems and requirements\, how do you get what you really want from lighting controls? Designers and architects need to consider the visual environment they are creating as well as the operational characteristics of the systems being installed. Design teams now often find themselves faced with questions of how to create a level of interoperability and digital integration with adjacent building systems that was not so commonplace in the recent past. Fortunately\, the tools exist to articulate both the designer’s intent and the specific steps required to achieve that intent. By examining the development process behind the Control Intent Narrative and the Sequence of Operations\, this seminar will provide guidance for assembling these documents and specific examples of language that is both clear and contractually enforceable. \n\nUnderstand roles and responsibilities of various team members as they apply to lighting control specification\nDistinguish between Control Intent Narratives and Sequences of Operation\, and how to use each to reduce pain points and meet the Owner’s Project Requirements\nUse the newly published ANSI/IES Document LP-16 to support contractually enforceable language in control specification\nProvide successful examples of controls documentation for a range of projects\, from the simplicity of meeting code to the newest interoperable lighting enabling integration with digital technologies of high value to owners and tenants\n\nCarol Jones\nCarol Jones has been a visible\, published and active leader in the transformation of the lighting industry for 3+ decades. Her wide experience includes lighting design\, standards development\, emerging technologies\, human factors research\, energy efficiency\, customer insights and system innovation.
