Right here in Jamaica Plain)\n\nPresenters:\nDavede Alexander: As an entrepreneur\, strategic planner\, and leader with a passion for seeing others succeed\, Davede excels at transitioning organizations from the limits of their current state to higher performance levels. His firm Innovo Strategic Solutions guides nonprofits\, higher education institutions\, and government entities through difficult transitions while preserving their identity and core competencies. \nDriven by integrity and service\, Davede places just as much emphasis on sustainability as he does in building effective operations. He earned a B.S. in Political Science from the U.S. Naval Academy and his M.B.A. from the University of Maryland Global Campus. Davede served two tours as a Surface Warfare Officer supporting the strike and maritime security operations in the North Arabian Gulf. During his tenure as the Naval Academy’s first Director\, Strategic Outreach\, their team doubled the number of applications\, dramatically increasing the competitiveness and diversity of incoming classes. \nIn addition to leading Innovo\, he serves as the Executive Director of the Ron Burton Training Village\, a youth development organization dedicated to producing socially conscious and culturally fluent leaders of character. He volunteers as a Governor-appointed member of the Board of Trustees at Bridgewater State University\, serving as co-chair of its Racial Justice Task Force. \nLee Brandt: graduated from Penn State University’s Architectural Engineering program with an emphasis in Lighting in 1999 receiving both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees.  She has been at HLB Lighting Design since early 2000.  During her career growth at HLB she has worked on many projects of various sizes and market sectors and helps manage the NY office. Strategically as one of the firm’s partners\, she focuses firmwide on recruitment\, development and in general keeping the team happy and striving with HLB’s HR team.  She is active in the IALD’s E&S Committee and locally in the IES\, DLF\, and WILD.  Lee lives with her husband\, Jim\, in the NJ suburbs with her two sons ages 15 and 12.  They love sports\, traveling and movies. \n\n\n\nEbony Kirby-Hopkins: is the Managing Principal and Founder of Mesh Business Advisors. She is a SHRM-CP generalist with over 15 years of human resources experience. The link information is included in the registration email.\n\nDescription:\n\n\n\nThe term ‘biodynamic’ lighting is proposed as a term to capture the true aspiration of ‘life-centric’ lighting: good human and non-human outcomes for all life-sustaining behaviors on earth driven by good design for phototropism\, phototaxis\, photoperiodism and circadian entrainment. As many aspects of animal\, human and plant behaviour and survival are being perturbed by widespread exposure to artificial light at night (ALAN)\, lighting professionals are in the middle\, attempting to make design decisions that directly affect these life forms. This workshop empowers participants with fundamental understandings of how light information is used by these life forms in a way crucial for development\, growth and survival. \nKey references are consolidated and synthesized with goals of supporting knowledge translation into pragmatic lighting strategies in a manner useful for lighting professionals. \n\n\n\nA framework – that characterizes the lighting application\, determines the likely behavioral cycle(s) of life forms\, determines the restoration needs of these life forms\, reviews published guidelines to develop goals and design criteria that support human and non-human outcomes – is proposed to guide the lighting design process. \nSpeaker:\n \nAmardeep Dugar \n\n\n\nA trained architect and an advocate for all the elements of lighting – design\, education and research – Dr. Amardeep M. Dugar is the founding principal of Lighting Research & Design. After completing a Masters degree in Architectural Lighting from University of Wismar/Germany\, he pursued a Ph.D. from Victoria University of Wellington/New Zealand to solidify his academic and professional leadership role into a career at a higher level. His notable achievements include being named the Outstanding Young Scientist at the India International Science Fest 2016 and 40-Under-40 Hottest Lighting Designers in the World 2017 by Lighting Magazine UK amongst others. Aside from working on high profile projects and teaching at several architecture schools\, he has been instrumental in conducting lighting workshops educating students and professionals about the importance of lighting. Amardeep has presented at several international conferences such as the IES Annual Conference 2012\, 2015\, 2020 & 2022; IES Research Symposium 2016; Light Fair International 2014\, 2020 & 2023; IALD Enlighten 2014\, 2016 & 2019; Light Focus 2004 & 2006; and Professional Lighting Design Convention 2007\, 2009\, 2011\, 2013\, 2015\, 2017 & 2019 to name a few. He is also the co-founder of an online platform for lighting called the Virtual Lighting Design Community. He currently serves in the IES Board of Directors and is Chair of the IES Global Development Committee.

She believes in equitable access to architecture and has enjoyed working on educational projects throughout her career. Her commitment to design spans to the education of sustainable design practices\, both inside the office and the greater architectural community. She is involved with the Boston Chapter of the Carbon Leadership Forum participating on the advisory group that created the Carbon 101 educational series hosted by the Boston Society of Architects and the Carbon Leadership Forum producing content that resides on AIAU. She continues her advocacy on projects where she is a driving force behind holistic sustainable design solutions targeting water\, energy\, waste\, and carbon. \n \nKate Hickcox \nKate Hickcox joined PNNL in 2020. She is a creative thinker with over 20 years of experience in lighting\, research and design. Kate’s work focuses on sustainability\, which means considering the complex aesthetic\, technical\, visual\, and non-visual needs of people while at the same time equitably benefiting the economy\, society\, and the environment. Kate’s unique background blends the artistic with the practical and allows for discovery of unique design solutions and innovative research-based strategies. Her work at PNNL includes supporting Energy Equity and Justice in Systems Technology work\, leading decarbonization and circularity efforts for lighting and other mechanical and electrical systems\, and work in outdoor nighttime lighting. \nShe has authored or co-authored many technical publications/reports and has presented at LightFair International\, IALD\, LEDucation\, the CIE and the IES on topics including sustainability\, life cycle assessment\, subjective rating scales\, designing for darkness\, glare and brightness perception\, lighting\, and acoustics as well as lighting quality metrics. \nShe is currently a member of the IES Standards Committee\, member of the ASHRAE Building Decarbonization Whole Life Design Guide working group\, Secretary of the IES Technical Committee: Discomfort Glare in Outdoor Nighttime Environments and a contributing member of the IES Sustainability Committee. \n \nKayleigh Houde  \nKayleigh Houde is the global Computational Community Leader for Buro Happold where she works at the intersection of engineering\, sustainability and computational design. Kayleigh is a founding member and co-chair of Carbon Leadership Forum’s MEP 2040 Challenge\, an ASHRAE Building Decarbonization Task Force member\, and currently teaches Parametric Life Cycle Assessment at the University of Pennsylvania. \n \nLeela Shanker \nLeela Shanker is a New York-based lighting designer with Borealis Lighting Studio of BR+A\, a consulting engineering firm founded in Boston in 1975. She consults to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory as a technical expert in Life Cycle Analysis and through the GreenLight Alliance (GLA) – an international network of lighting professionals progressing industry-led standards\, research and advocacy for circular lighting design principles – she founded the Lighting Industry LCA Incubator. In collaboration with the IALD Lighting Industry Resource Council\, North American and European manufacturers are participating in an international study with designers from around the world to pursue global harmonization of the lighting industry’s approach to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Her work with the AIA’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) and Carbon Leadership Forum New York chapter address lighting-specific issues related to Embodied Carbon and LCA. \nSince September 2022\, Shanker has been developing initiatives as a member of the Creative Science Track of NEW INC\, the New Museum’s incubator for people working at the intersection of art\, design and technology. She is pursuing this work with the Flint Collective NYC\, a non-profit 501(c)(3) corporation she founded and whose project\, OPEN\, was recognised by the Illuminating Engineering Society NYC in 2021 with a Lumen Award Special Citation for Lighting as a Tool for Social Impact. \nShanker holds a Master of Architecture (Hons) and Master of Fine Arts – Lighting Design from Parsons School of Design and a Bachelor of Law and Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Sydney. She has been published on industry platforms including Designing Lighting\, Dezeen and illumni\, frequently presents at industry forums including LEDucation\, Walk Bike Places and the IES Meet the Moment Series\, has guest lectured at Parsons School of Design and Syracuse University\, and is an active member of the DLFNY\, IALD\, IES\, and AIA. \n

SUMMARY:Mastering the Maze of Lighting Controls Specification
DESCRIPTION:With so many different types of systems and requirements\, how do you get what you really want from lighting controls? Designers and architects need to consider the visual environment they are creating as well as the operational characteristics of the systems being installed. Design teams now often find themselves faced with questions of how to create a level of interoperability and digital integration with adjacent building systems that was not so commonplace in the recent past. Fortunately\, the tools exist to articulate both the designer’s intent and the specific steps required to achieve that intent. By examining the development process behind the Control Intent Narrative and the Sequence of Operations\, this seminar will provide guidance for assembling these documents and specific examples of language that is both clear and contractually enforceable. \n\nUnderstand roles and responsibilities of various team members as they apply to lighting control specification\nDistinguish between Control Intent Narratives and Sequences of Operation\, and how to use each to reduce pain points and meet the Owner’s Project Requirements\nUse the newly published ANSI/IES Document LP-16 to support contractually enforceable language in control specification\nProvide successful examples of controls documentation for a range of projects\, from the simplicity of meeting code to the newest interoperable lighting enabling integration with digital technologies of high value to owners and tenants\n\nCarol Jones\nCarol Jones has been a visible\, published and active leader in the transformation of the lighting industry for 3+ decades. Her wide experience includes lighting design\, standards development\, emerging technologies\, human factors research\, energy efficiency\, customer insights and system innovation. Carol has long been at the forefront of bringing higher value digital lighting into reality and is enthusiastic about how it will change our world for the better. She has been tangibly involved in the role of lighting within the Internet of Things\, working to create a deeper understanding of how lighting can enable high value use cases for owners and users\, without sacrificing lighting quality and controls intent. Carol is a member of the IES Lighting Control Systems and Sustainability committees.  Previous affiliations include Axis Lighting\, Enlighted\, Philips Lighting\, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory\, and HLB Lighting Design. \nShoshanna A\, Segal\, CLD\, IALD\, LEED AP\, MIES\nShoshanna Segal is currently serving as the President-Elect of the New York City Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) and is an active member of the Lighting Controls Technical Committee which develops nationally recognized standards for lighting control.  She is a Professional Member of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and is among the first professionals in the world to earn the certification\, CLD\,  having demonstrated mastery in seven domains of lighting design as established  by the CLD Global organization and the IALD.  Ms. Segal is a Senior Designer at Hartranft Lighting Design.
